A couple years ago, I bought a bunch of expired domains. They don’t get any traffic but I had fun building them up, dinosaurs, cats, weed, etc.
They are distractions from my real work – fun hobbies; because I love the branding and ideation of new creative projects… it’s much easier to make something new instead of fix up and improve what I already have. That said, despite almost never blogging at all, some of my sites actually get quite a big of traffic, for random shit like love poetry or onomatopoeia.
I also started an SEO company and have accidentally been making quite a bit of money with guest post content, helping big businesses get more traffic with creative writing and design. For good companies I believe in, this has been an intriguing value proposition, especially since most of the time, I make no money with my creative projects (even the successful ones!)
As a career trajectory, I was doing book cover design and then began making templates and a book cover maker; and also novel editing which has become ai writing tools.
I have too many sites.
It’s honestly a burden, but I hate to let them go, even if they don’t get traffic.
I have expertise and skills that are in demand, but I don’t want to actually do anything (I reluctantly take on clients when I need to) – so I’ve been trying to replace myself with free tools and resources… even as my peers make worse shit and charge much more for it.
I’m hoping to improve.
